To really succeed in Copenhagen, tropical forest protection needs smart stoves and briquettes

Rwanda_Burundi_19878There’s little doubt that Copenhagen will allow for some form of compensation to countries that substantially protect their forests. This is the essence of REDD (Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation).   Already a handful of developing countries have joined the World Bank in establishing the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility, a framework for the day when the fat pipe from industrialized countries starts flowing dollars in exchange for the protection of forests.

I’m wondering if that’s what’s behind Rwanda’s motivation to plant 20 million trees by 2012, thus raising its forest cover by 3.5%. The plan is to raise this figure to 10% by 2020.  Read the interview with Minister of Environment and Natural Resources, Stanislas Kamanzi. (Courtesy allAfrica.com)

Perhaps Rwanda and other countries will consider dedicating a portion of the receipts from the sale of the carbon offsets to funding a nationwide campaign to promote the widespread adoption of energy-efficient stoves and a briquettes program.

Hey, they could even sell the offsets from the stove and briquettes program!

    I would like to join other people who are interested of the indoor pollution .
    i am a Rwandan researcher on reducing energy consumption at the same time increasing heat productivity . That is why i made a SAS cooker stove which can reduce charcoal consumption at 90% as usual used stoves some information have been collected . (Steel Air and Stones )
    Quick ,Saving time
    Saving time spent of being ill or having care for sick children will cut health care expenses and will increase earnings capacity. Saving cooking time ,Ignition time : normally Jiko stove take about 10 to twenty minutes contrary to SAS cooker stove take only 30 seconds ,boiling 2 liters take 4 minutes ,cooking 1kg of rice take 12 minutes ,continue to regulate your fire using the regulator, load more charcoal when it finish not the stones ,
    Safe and security :
    Design of the body building can be use to hit a person intentionally or by accident for it is well designed on cubic form with Thermal isolation is used to protect children from the risk of heat and radiations from metallic cookers .
    By using electrical component , it is hided inside the cooker stove and protected from contact to the body which is metallic small part is 220V AC but the longest part of it is only 12V DC which cannot harm any one
    Gases emissions ,SAS cooker stove will reduce smoke at 93.3 % of CO2 emitted in air from normal jiko stoves used in Rwanda ,the smoke is maintained in the hole of rocks where the complete combustion is done ,it is reduced when the air passes into the filter to reduce the molecular of oxygen .
    It consume oxygen from inside the body , it doesn’t need oxygen from outside like aspiration different from other cooker which take oxygen from mouth or out side the cooker .
    Easy loading and unloading of charcoal and rocks
    According to my research culture of using charcoal took long time ago so loading and unloading should considered because women fear their security of gas cooker and electrical cookers
    the fire box put on the filter first, load mixture of charcoal and stone at ration of 1/6 .

    Where fuels purchased, increasing fuel efficiency thus cutting down the quantity of fuel needed will ease constraints of tight budget.
    Economical : load 50grams of charcoal are enough for 30minutes add more 50 grams spacing 30 minutes depending what you want cook
    On electrical consumption it used 12V DC ,uses 6 frw per hours equivalent to 0.02 us$ per day. Compared to Kenya Jiko which uses from 6-8 hours will consume 1$

    Food security :using SAS cooker stoves will reduce forest exploitation leading to restoring natural soil fertility leading agriculture productivity ,reduce also expenditures on chemical fertilizers usage in the

    Durable of the SAS Cooker stove the body building of the stove we use steel metal which can take more than 15 years ,painted with metallic paint will bring the cooker to shine and be washed and cleaned , for the Electrical component used we try to get durable cheap materials which are available and easy to be replaced when damaged

    In Rwanda planting a single tree will cost almost 2 dollars and urban families will use charcoal of 28 trees per month equivalent of 4 sacs .
    In Kigali only 200,000 families cook using 800,000 sacs per month equivalent of 5,600,000 trees per month which far away of trees planted every month . The use of SAS cooker stove will reduce the cutting down trees at 85% by distributing of 200,000 sas cooker for every urban family .

    Reducing deforestation at 85% and C02 emission in the air and the soil will gain in natural fertility , agriculture productivity and harvesting will increase ,natural medical plant will rise again , the problem of acid rain will cease .

    Improved household energy technology will give more opportunity of employment and get income generating revenue. Access to electricity will provide light in order to use sewing machine , refrigerator , welding, which is an economic activity at evening .
