Maa Briquettes

Industry: Briquette Producer
Location: Narok, Kenya

Mission and Operation

Maa Briquettes in located in Narok County, Kenya, where they collect agricultural waste and charcoal dust from the environment and recycle it to produce eco friendly briquettes. Their mission is to provide a sustainable fuel solution that is readily available and affordable to their consumers, who are primarily hotels and households.

George Karaya founded the company in 2013 after getting the idea from a YouTube video.  He bootstrapped the company into being by selling his laptop so he could buy a briquetting machine.  He has worked hard to grow the company and currently planning on expanding further to a new plot of land to obtain more space for drying and to start experimenting with carbonization of agricultural waste, like macadamia nuts and bagasse.

In the HFI Kenya Program, George looks forward to networking with other produces in order to reach more customers and connect with larger hotels, as well as help reach their product to end customers in order to make Maa Briquettes independent.

Founder
“I started Maa Briquettes for the purpose of making an income and protecting the environment. After watching donkeys carry bags of fuel in a small town in Narok, I realized that there were so many trees being cutdown to make fuel. I came up with the idea of making charcoal briquettes to help supply households while also protecting the environment.”
